Around the Town; S.A. firms touting national clients that focus on loving, fighting

Let's start with stories about some small San Antonio companies who are doing
some work for prominent clients.
Not kung fu fighting
First, the sport of ultimate fighting.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship has hired two local firms -- inHouse PR and
Garcia 360 -- to work on their national Hispanic market outreach.
In case you're not familiar with ultimate fighting, it's a hand-to hand battle
in a cage that includes various styles of martial arts. And it's widely
acknowledged as the country's fastest-growing sport.
Among the duties of the San Antonio companies are to show that these matches
have become much more respectable.
Not making war
Now if you're a lover, not a fighter, this may be more to your liking.
Another small, local public relations firm here -- Mason PR, led by its founder,
Lauren Mason -- is handling the marketing and communications for North America
for Durex.
And what exactly is Durex? Well, it's well-known in Europe, but not as much here
in the United States. The leading brand that Durex competes against is Trojans.
Lunch tunes
On a completely different note, a downtown concert series begins this afternoon.
St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church is launching its First Friday Concert
Series in honor of its 150th anniversary this year. The 30-minute concerts are
free and open to the public, and a light lunch in the church hall follows each
concert.
The church is at 502 E. Nueva, across from La Villita, and the concerts continue
monthly through May.
By the way, the first concert features mezzo-soprano Barbara Hanson Nellermoe.
By day, she's a Bexar County District Court judge.
More than a game
After Saturday's hockey game with the San Antonio Rampage, another hockey match
is taking place -- and it has lots of meaning.
The game pits the San Antonio Hose Hounds against a team from the Arlington
Police Department. It's a fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, but
also a way for the team members to salute the brother of one of their own.
See, one of the San Antonio Hose hounds, firefighter Tom Schwennesen, has a
brother who was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor.
So the members of the local firefighter team are each wearing a sticker with the
initials "TWS," in honor of Todd Schwennesen.
(Full disclosure: Todd and Tom Schwennesen are brothers of Tricia Schwennesen, a
deputy metro editor here.)
Good luck in the game, and in treatment.
