Securus Technologies is a communications company that was established in 1986. Securus works with correctional institutions to provide means of communications between inmates and family members through a proprietary telephone system. Securus currently serves 1.2 million inmates in over 3,400 correctional institutions all over North America.
When an incarcerated individual can speak freely with family it helps the individual to have hope. It also serves as a reason for the individual to realize that whatever he or she is to have to go to prison affects more than himself or herself. It is good for the inmate and good for the family.
There are various ways the phone system can be set up from the family paying the charges, collect calls, monthly billing and inmate payment.
The other side of the coin is that whenever a freely usable and open system of communication is provided to incarcerated individuals there is the possibility of criminal behavior due to the freedom that such a system provides.
Securus has instituted a monitoring and a voice recognition system that can identify the caller and the recipient of the call which goes a long way towards deterring criminal intent. The inmates are informed about the system and that in itself has positive consequences.
By monitoring calls Securus is able to prevent the proliferation into the prisons of drugs, alcohol, weapons, illicit sex, and plans for outside crimes that can possibly originate in the institution.
Not all of the inmates are involved in such criminal activities, but it only takes a few to be involved to cause disruption. The monitoring system and voice recognition ability help to protect other inmates, prison personnel, families and the public at large. Just the knowledge of such a system cause most inmates to stay on the straight and narrow because they are aware of the system.
